It was exactly around the castle that the first settlement of Torres Novas was constituted. Along the fence, a set of walls that surrounded the fortress and defended it from enemy attacks, there were four arches or shutters, which functioned as the main arteries to and from the village. This primitive urban structure remained largely constant until the 16th century, because although there was a demographic increase, the population occupied the spaces still available within the wall, essentially next to the church of Salvador.
